In June-July 2006, OAR archaeologists with a team of diverse volunteers from North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia conducted an 11-day survey and site testing project at the Cape Creek site (31DR1) in Buxton, North Carolina (Cape Hatteras). The fieldwork component of the project was sponsored by The Lost Colony Center for Science and Research (LCCSR).
For an overview on the most recent Buxton locality investigations, as well as a summary sketch of Dr. David S. Phelps' 1994--2000 fieldwork at 31DR1, see Jim Morrison's 2006 article in American Archaeology, which is available at most libraries. For general publication information, click here:

Olde Albemarle Research (OAR) is a non-profit concern (State of North Carolina Non-Profit Corporation) expressly formed to further explore, teach and promote public knowledge of eastern North Carolina's past societies. This goal will be accomplished through multi-disciplinary efforts, which include anthropological (archaeology, ethnology and ethnohistory), historical (documentary and oral history) and architectural (historic structures and cemeteries) studies, public archaeology programs, and historic preservation, eco-cultural tourism and cultural resources management project support.
In addition to support services available to regional non-profit and public education entities, the OAR team can provide a range of cultural resources management (CRM) compliance services to local, state and federal agencies or private entities. Compliance related services include: cultural resources planning studies, reconnaisance (phase I) surveys, archaeological site testing (phase II), evaluation of historic structures or historic landscapes, preparation of cultural resources management plans, historic preservation plans, and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) nomination documentation.
